The fruit of myrobalan improves overall joint function in overweight people


A randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial has concluded that extracts from the myrobalan fruit support joint mobility and functional capacity in healthy overweight patients. The results of this study, published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, add to the growing amount of literature that recognizes the tropical fruit’s use for different health ailments.

  • One-hundred five overweight but seemingly healthy male and female participants were pre-screened and randomized to one of three groups:
    • Group 1: 250 mg of a standardized extract, taken twice daily
    • Group 2: 500 mg of the dietary supplementation, taken twice daily
    • Group 3: Placebo
  • The double-blind design ran for 84 days, with a two-week placebo lead-in period to improve data validity.
  • All subjects reported no knee joint discomfort at rest but experienced some form of pain after exercise.
  • Results showed that myrobalan supplementation improved total joint function as measured by modified health measurement tests.
  • There was no significant difference in outcome scores between Groups 1 and 2, but there existed a remarkable contrast between the treatment groups and the placebo.

Authors of this study noted that myrobalan might be a safe and effective way for overweight people to exercise comfortably without fear of knee or joint pain after their workout.
